Terms of Use

Last updated October 2, 2026

Thanks for using Handoff! We build it to make relay races easier to plan and more fun to run. We can't know every runner personally, so these terms set out what you can expect from us and what we expect from you.

"We", "us" and "our" mean Negative Split Software LLC, a Washington company. "Handoff" means the website at handoff.run and the Handoff race-day app. "You" means anyone who uses Handoff.

By using Handoff, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If we don't enforce part of these terms at some point, we haven't given up the right to. These terms limit our liability.

Your account

  • You must be at least 13 to have an account. If you are 13 to 17, you need a parent or guardian's permission, and they agree to these terms for you.
  • You must be a person. Accounts created by bots or other automated means aren't allowed.
  • Keep the details on your account accurate, and keep your sign-in secure. You are responsible for what happens under your account.

Captains and the people you add

  • When you add someone to a roster, you confirm that you have their permission to give us their name, email address and other details, and for us to email them an invitation if you send one.
  • Handoff can track what each runner owes, but it doesn't collect or move money between teammates. Any payment between teammates is between you and them.
  • As captain, you're responsible for your team's roster and plans. You can hand the team to another runner at any time.

Races and race day

  • We gather race details such as dates, legs, distances and exchanges from public sources. They can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. The race organizer's information and rules always come first, so check with them.
  • Handoff isn't a race organizer and doesn't register you for races. Unless we say otherwise, we aren't affiliated with or endorsed by any race. Race names and logos belong to their owners.
  • Projected times, arrival estimates and the times recorded in the app help your team plan. They aren't official results.
  • Relay races are physically demanding and involve roads, traffic, night running and a lot of driving. You take part at your own risk. Follow the race rules and traffic laws, and never use the app while driving.

Race Pass and refunds

  • Planning on the website is free. It really is free: we don't ask for a card.
  • The Race Pass turns on live timing in the race-day app for your team. It is a one-time payment per team, per race, and never renews. The price depends on the length of the relay and is discounted until 60 days before the race. You see the price before you pay, and Stripe processes the payment.
  • A Race Pass isn't refundable once it's bought, with three exceptions. If a technical problem with Handoff kept your team from using the app as intended, contact us and tell us what happened. Screenshots and any other details really help. If you can show the problem, we'll refund the pass in full, before or after the race. Live timing turns off once the pass is refunded.
  • If you were charged twice for the same team, we'll refund the extra payment.
  • If the event is cancelled, we'll refund your Race Pass in full. You don't need to ask. We refund these by hand, so it can take a few days.
  • If we change prices, the change doesn't affect passes you've already bought.

Use restrictions

When you use Handoff, you agree not to:

  • collect information about other runners or teams that you don't have a right to, including by scraping;
  • get around, disable or interfere with Handoff's security features or other people's access controls;
  • trick, defraud or mislead us or other people, for example by impersonating someone or adding people to a roster without their permission;
  • use invitations, requests or messages to send spam;
  • upload viruses or other malicious code;
  • overload, disrupt or interfere with Handoff or the networks it runs on;
  • harass, threaten or abuse other people, including anyone who works on Handoff; or
  • use Handoff in a way that breaks any law.

We may suspend or close accounts that do any of these things, without notice. To report abuse, email support@handoff.run with as much detail as you can, such as links or screenshots.

Your content and ours

  • What you put into Handoff stays yours: profiles, rosters, messages, asks, plans and times. You give us a limited license to store it and show it to the people it is meant for, such as your team or your spectators, so we can provide Handoff. We do not claim to own it.
  • We don't pre-screen content, but we may remove anything that breaks these terms.
  • If you send us suggestions or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything.
  • Handoff itself is ours: the software, design, name and logo. Don't copy, resell or reuse any part of it without our written permission. If you think something on Handoff infringes your copyright, email support@handoff.run.

Cancellation and termination

  • You can delete your account at any time from your account menu. The Privacy Policy explains what is removed and what is kept.
  • We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and refuse service to anyone, at any time. Abusing anyone who works on Handoff gets an account closed immediately.
  • If we ever shut Handoff down, we'll give you notice first and refund Race Passes for races that haven't started.

Changes to Handoff and these terms

We keep improving Handoff, so features change, and sometimes we have to remove one. We may change or discontinue any part of Handoff, with or without notice. We may also update these terms. When we do, we'll change the date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we'll also tell account holders by email or in the app. If you keep using Handoff after a change, you accept the updated terms.

Uptime, security and privacy

  • You use Handoff at your own risk. We provide it "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, and we don't guarantee it will be uninterrupted or free of bugs.
  • The race-day app is built to keep working without signal, but phones, batteries and networks fail. Keep a backup plan for race day, such as the race organizer's own tools or a printed copy of your legs.
  • We protect your data with encryption and careful practices. We process it only as our Privacy Policy describes.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable to you or anyone else for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, punitive or exemplary damages. That includes lost profits, goodwill, use or data, and injury, loss or damage on race day. It applies even if we were told such damages were possible, and whether they come from using or being unable to use Handoff, from inaccurate race or timing information, from unauthorized access to your data, from what other people say or do on Handoff, or from anything else to do with Handoff or these terms. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and US$50.

In other words, using Handoff means placing some trust in us. We work hard to deserve it. Some places don't allow these limits, so they apply to you only as far as your local law allows.

Disputes and governing law

If you have a problem with Handoff, please contact us first. Most problems can be solved that way, and we'll try for at least 30 days before either of us goes to court. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA, apart from its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute goes to the state or federal courts in King County, Washington, though either of us may use a small claims court instead. Nothing here takes away consumer rights your local law gives you.

General

  • These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Handoff.
  • If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies.
  • You can't transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else. We may transfer ours, for example if Handoff is sold or merged with another company.
  • You agree that we can send you notices electronically, by email or in Handoff.
